Nuclear power in conflicts - how is safety ensured?

For the first time in history, civil nuclear facilities have been caught up in the midst of warfare spurring major concerns on the issue of nuclear safety. How is this ensured in times of conflicts? What are the specific challenges and risks related to nuclear safety in such a context?

Join our online webinar on Thursday, September 29th to get insights from expert speakers on the matter of nuclear security and related risks in conflicts, more specifically in the light of the current situation in Ukraine.

Organized by Engineers Without Borders Sweden, we invite our partner Vattenfall together with:

MEET THE SPEAKERS

  • Caroline is a multi-disciplinary engineer with 12 years’ experience from research and management within global development and poverty reduction. She holds a Licentiate degree in Engineering Physics from Uppsala University. Her research concerned technical and social aspects of rural electrification using PV-Diesel hybrid systems, mainly in East Africa. Caroline has been involved with Engineers Without Borders since 2011 as a volunteer and became the organization´s Secretary general in 2018. She has played a central role in the development of the organization in general in her role as Secretary General, and particularly the international development work of EWB-SWE which she also led for several years.

  • Per has an extensive experience of 44 years within the nuclear industry at Vattenfall and the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) that he joined for the first time in 2011 and again in 2018 as Assessment Manager, Line Manager, PR Team Leader and Programme Manager for Member Support Missions. At Vattenfall, his main areas were Operations, starting as a field operator, operator, operation support manager and operation manager. At his home plant Ringhals NPP, his last position before he joined WANO again was Deputy Director of Production and responsible for unit 1 and 2 safe operations - both permanently shut down for a couple of years now. Per is currently WANO point of contact with the Ukrainian stations, as well as Chernobyl. He also acts as WANO contact person to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) emergency organization.

  • Lilián Norrlid holds a PhD in Engineering physics from Uppsala University. With experiences in front-end applications of physics such as novel particle detectors and medical imaging, for which she is a proud inventor with a US patent, Lilián’s career in Nuclear Safety spans more than 20 years. In 2006, she joined the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority as SSM’s laboratory group leader and nuclear safety analyst. As a consultant during 3 years for AFRY, Lilián has led and managed key projects in Sweden following the decision of the government of decommissioning several nuclear power plants, as well as in Norway and Turkey. She joined the Licensing East at Fuel Energy & Projects, Vattenfall in 2019, where she have taken part in projects for the dismantling and decommissioning of the reactors R1 and R2 of Ringhals and contributed to the licensing path of Vattenfall’s hydrogen project HYBRYT. Since April 2021, Lilián has been engaged with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and leads assignments promoting nuclear safety for the decommissioning of nuclear facilities and remediation of contaminated sites.

  • Mikael is a nuclear physicist by training and defended his PhD thesis on experimental nuclear structure studies in 2003 at Chalmers University, Göteborg. He has been employed at Vattenfall since 2017, primarily focusing on radiological safety analyses related areas. Having previously served at the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority (SSM) and the Swedish Defense Research Agency (FOI), he has extensive experience of international work in the field of nuclear technology; encompassing project management of bi- and multilateral cooperation exchanges on emergency preparedness and response, occupational exposure and monitoring issues in former Soviet states (e.g. Russia and Ukraine), from operator to authority and ministry state levels. His work has further included nuclear threat assessments, and technical assessments regarding disarmament and non-proliferation related to nuclear weapons issues, representing Sweden as technical expert in several international fora.
